Thank you to the New York State Department of Health (NYSDOH) and the New York State Office of Addiction Services and Supports (OASAS) for partnering to integrate BUPE-AP into the MATTERS referral process.

The New York State Buprenorphine Assistance Program (BUPE-AP) was developed by the NYSDOH and OASAS to cover the cost of buprenorphine for people who don’t have access through insurance. Buprenorphine, also referred to as the brand name Suboxone, is an FDA-approved medication to treat opioid use disorder; it works on the opioid receptors in the brain to manage withdrawal symptoms and opioid cravings.

MATTERS is proud to announce that BUPE-AP will be integrated into its rapid referral process! Since its inception in 2016, MATTERS has worked to improve access to medication for addiction treatment (MAT), including buprenorphine. Now, in addition to receiving a 14-day medication voucher for the uninsured, individuals will be connected to BUPE-AP for long-term access to buprenorphine.

Consistent access to MAT can have life-saving impacts. Many public health leaders, including the New York State Governor’s Office, have cited that improved access to treatment for substance use disorder is one of the factors contributing to the recent decline in overdose deaths nationwide. MATTERS’ Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Joshua Lynch, stated, “Our program is committed to addressing barriers to treatment for people with opioid use disorder. Cost of medication is a significant problem for many patients seeking care, and we are looking forward to implementing this program to get medication into the hands of people who need it most.”
